Meet some of our leaders

Image of Mike Munoz Mike Munoz Market President

Mike Munoz is market president of AmeriHealth New Jersey. He has overall responsibility for profit-and-loss management and business operations for the statewide health plan.

Munoz assumed his current role in 2017 after leading the company’s Sales and Marketing organization for over a decade. During that time, he oversaw new business sales and retention across all market segments in addition to product management, marketing and public relations. His leadership resulted in enhanced product offerings, better engagement with the broker community and heightened brand awareness for AmeriHealth New Jersey throughout the state.

Munoz has more than 25 years of experience in the health insurance industry. Prior to AmeriHealth New Jersey, he held several leadership roles at Oxford Health Plans.

An active leader in the local New Jersey communities, Munoz currently sits on the boards of the Camden Community Partnership, Special Olympics New Jersey, United Way of Greater Philadelphia & Southern New Jersey, and the Chamber of Commerce Southern New Jersey. In 2021, he was featured on South Jersey Biz’s Power 50 list for the fifth time. In 2019, he was recognized as an Executive of the Year by the New Jersey Business and Industry Association as well as South Jersey Biz. In 2018 the March of Dimes named him Citizen of the Year in Business.

Michael Murphy is vice president of sales for AmeriHealth New Jersey and oversees new business and retention for AmeriHealth New Jersey’s entire sales organization across all market segments including consumer, small and large business, and public sector. In addition, he is responsible for sales strategy, product development, and customer experience for all market segments.

Murphy has more than two decades of commitment to the company and most recently served as sales director at AmeriHealth New Jersey, and was responsible for new business sales and broker development in the large group segments for fully insured and self-funded customers. He also developed product strategy to keep AmeriHealth New Jersey at the forefront of the large group market.

Earlier in his career at AmeriHealth New Jersey, Murphy held several positions including sales manager, where he was responsible for maintaining and growing broker relationships, and as a broker executive and account supervisor. He also spent nearly a decade as a finance associate with General Accident PLC.

Murphy has his life and health producer’s license in New Jersey and is a member of the New Jersey Associate of Health Underwriters. He graduated with his bachelor’s degree in marketing from Temple University.

"Image Matthew Toohey Network Medical Director

Dr. Matthew Toohey is network medical director for AmeriHealth New Jersey and collaborates with primary care providers to drive improved performance, including primary care population health and value-based programs with health systems. In addition, he supports providers in advancing the quintuple aim – cost efficiency, quality of care, improved member and provider experience and health equity.

Dr. Toohey most recently served as medical director for a large family medicine primary care group within Martin’s Point Health Care in Maine, where he oversaw quality initiatives. He also previously served as a senior medical director in the quality department for Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey, and as a medical director for Aetna in Philadelphia. He has extensive experience working with government programs, including Medicare Advantage Stars quality measures.

A graduate of Rutgers University Medical School, Dr. Toohey is a board-certified pediatrician and fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics. He completed his internship in Internal Medicine at the University of Connecticut and his Pediatric Medicine residency at K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital in New Jersey. He has active licensure in New Jersey and Pennsylvania.
