Metallic categories

Our plans are broken into four tiers of metallic categories: Platinum, Gold, Silver and Bronze. Every health insurance plan is required to be assigned a metal level under the Affordable Care Act.

*

The metallic categories represent the way in which you and AmeriHealth New Jersey will share the costs of your care. They do not reflect the quality or amount of care the plans provide.

For example, with a Platinum plan, you'll have to pay a higher premium each month. But when it comes time to pay for medical services, you'll have lower out-of-pocket costs. On the other hand, with a Bronze plan, your premium will be lower, but you'll have more out-of-pocket costs to pay later down the line.

Premium & Deductible
A balance of costs
  • The premium is the amount you pay each month for your plan.
  • A deductible is paid for separately and is part of your out-of-pocket costs.
You'll start the year off paying for your medical bills but only up to the amount of your deductible. Once you've met your deductible, AmeriHealth New Jersey begins to pay its share (for covered services). By choosing a plan with a higher premium, you can lower your deductible. A lower premium would give you a higher deductible.

Consider Platinum or Gold insurance plans if you go to the doctor a lot and will need to use your insurance often. Consider Silver or Bronze insurance plans if you don’t see the doctor very often

Catastrophic Plans

Under the Affordable Care Act, Catastrophic plans will also be available to people under the age of 30 and to those who qualify due to extreme hardship.

Catastrophic plans cover the ten essential health benefits, but have much higher deductibles than the plans in the metallic categories.
