Health insurance for self-employed New Jersey residents
I work for myself and I need a plan that works for me too...
AmeriHealth New Jersey offers health insurance plans to serve the full range of self-employed professionals in our state — from consultants to freelancers to entrepreneurs (including many small businesses).
If you’re self-employed, you and your household members are going to need health insurance. It’s the best way to ensure that you and your loved ones are shielded from the potentially high costs of health care.
Since you aren’t insuring multiple employees, you qualify for AmeriHealth New Jersey’s Individual and Family plan options. Whatever your budget, wherever your business takes you, we have an affordable health insurance plan with the coverage you need.
You’re not alone
While being self-employed can feel very solitary, in reality, you’re in very good company. As of October 2020, there were nearly 16 million self-employed individuals in the United States, according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics.¹
Self-employed workers (also known as independent contractors, contingency workers, freelancers, gig workers, and small business owners) earn a living working for themselves — not as employees of someone else and not as owners of a corporation.
According to the Internal Revenue Service, someone is self-employed if they…
- Carry on a trade or business as a sole proprietor or independent contractor
- Belong to a partnership that carries on a trade or business, or
- Are otherwise in business for themselves, including part-time business.²
These are some of New Jersey’s most popular types of self-employed workers:
- Uber and Lyft drivers
- General contractors

Coverage options for self-employed individuals
The best way to shop for health insurance in New Jersey is to get a better understanding of the individual and family plans that are available. The Affordable Care Act requires all health plans to be organized into Bronze, Silver, and Gold categories according to the level of coverage they offer. There’s also a Catastrophic coverage plan available for people under 30 or those who qualify for a special exemption.
All plans cover the same essential health benefits; the difference is what you pay in monthly premiums and out-of-pocket costs when you need care. The following chart may help you decide what type of health plan is best for you — based on how much you are willing to pay towards your premium each month and the amount you’ll pay when you receive care.
For example, a Bronze health plan may be best for you if you don't use a lot of health care services and want to pay less in monthly premiums. On the other hand, Gold might make more sense if you use a lot of health care and are able to pay more in monthly premiums.
|Monthly premium||Cost when you receive care||Good option if you...|
|Gold||$$$$||$||Tend to use a lot of health care services|
|Silver||$$$||$$||Need to balance your monthly premium with your out-of-pocket costs|
|Bronze||$$||$$$||Don’t use a lot of health care services|
|Catastrophic||$||$$$$||Meet the requirements and need “just-in-case” coverage|
Making health insurance affordable for as many people as possible
Under the Affordable Care Act (also called Obamacare), the government is required to help pay for your health insurance if you can’t afford it on your own. There are a few ways you can get help paying for a health plan.
- If you qualify for the Advance Premium Tax Credit, the federal government will pay a part of your premium each month; or you could opt to receive a tax refund at the end of the year.
- If you qualify for lower out-of-pocket costs, you’ll pay less for things like prescriptions, emergency care, and copays.
- New financial help is available to lower your monthly premiums through Get Covered New Jersey. The state of New Jersey is offering a state subsidy, called New Jersey Health Plan Savings, that will help lower your premium. To learn more, visit GetCovered.NJ.gov.
What does it take to qualify for an Advance Premium Tax Credit?
It’s based on the size of your family and how your income compares to the government’s current official poverty level. You can use our subsidy calculator to determine what kind of savings you would qualify for in 2021.
You might be able to get help paying for your health plan from the government or the state of New Jersey. See if you qualify or learn more about Health Care Reform and how it affects you.
If your income is low enough, you may even qualify for New Jersey FamilyCare (otherwise known as Medicaid and CHIP).
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I really need health insurance?
Health insurance is a very smart investment if you are starting to build your own business. Out-of-pocket health care is expensive. No one plans to get sick or hurt, but illnesses and injuries can happen at any time. In some cases, they can leave you with overwhelming medical bills.
Health insurance can not only help you save money on covered health services but also offers preventive services at no additional cost. Preventive care helps catch illnesses early and helps you stay healthy in the future. Also, the State of New Jersey has an individual health insurance coverage mandate, which requires New Jersey residents to have health insurance or possibly pay a fine.
Does AmeriHealth New Jersey offer affordable health insurance options for self-employed New Jersey residents?
AmeriHealth New Jersey has a range of insurance plans to suit your needs and budget. But depending on your estimated yearly income and the size of your family, you may also qualify for a government subsidy to help you afford your monthly health insurance premiums.
Try our Subsidy Calculator to see if you might be eligible. If you don't qualify for a subsidy, stay on our site to browse and enroll in an affordable health insurance plan directly with AmeriHealth New Jersey.
