Event Raises Record-Breaking $210,000 for Special Olympics New Jersey

Weehawken, NJ - April 18, 2011 - For the 25th consecutive year, runners and walkers of all ages and abilities gathered here for the annual Lincoln Tunnel Challenge in support of Special Olympics New Jersey - breaking participation and fund-raising records in the process.

The Lincoln Tunnel Challenge, presented by AmeriHealth New Jersey, is a 5K (3.1 mile) race taking participants through the south tube of the Lincoln Tunnel, from New Jersey to New York and back to New Jersey. This special 25th anniversary edition of the race included more than 3,500 registered runners and walkers, and raised more than $210,000 for Special Olympics Jersey.

This year's overall winner in the male category was Victor Reyes of Paterson, NJ, with a finish time of 16:19. The top female finisher was Kathleen Castles of New Providence, NJ, who completed the race in 17:35. The increasingly popular event saw runners attempting to conquer the tunnel's steep 8.5 percent grade. Complete race results are available at

Judith Roman, president and CEO of AmeriHealth New Jersey, said that, "This was a terrific event. AmeriHealth New Jersey is proud of our long-time association with Special Olympics New Jersey, and we are especially proud to present the Lincoln Tunnel Challenge. The race embodies both our commitment to wellness as well as our commitment to contributing to our New Jersey community."

Marc Edenzon, president and CEO of Special Olympics New Jersey, added that, "The support for the Lincoln Tunnel Challenge has increased year after year, from the incredible commitment of the Port Authority Police and our presenting sponsor AmeriHealth New Jersey, to the runners themselves reaching out to family and friends to pledge their support for our athletes. While 3,500 people may have run through the tunnel, there were well over 20,000 individuals who donated and supported their journey."
